Bobaľky, small baked dough balls with poppy seeds and honey

The story

On Christmas Eve in Slovak homes, bobaľky come to the table two ways at once. These small balls of yeast dough are baked, softened with hot milk or water, then tossed either in poppy seeds and honey (the sweet version) or in sauerkraut (the savory version), and both are set out on the same table so that everyone can choose according to taste, or try both. The dough for bobaľky is similar to the dough for vianočka, so in some households it comes from the same batch as the braided Christmas loaf, a practical way of taking care of two items on the menu with a single mixing. The sweet version, with poppy seeds and honey, is seen as a symbol of prosperity, in the same tradition that links poppy seeds with abundance throughout Central Europe, while the savory sauerkraut version reflects the plainer, rural side of the Christmas Eve table. For Slovak families in the diaspora, bobaľky are one of the lesser-known but dearly loved dishes that seldom travel beyond the circle of those who grew up eating them — a true test of real Slovak heritage at the table.
