The story

For Serbian Orthodox Easter, which falls on May 2 in 2027, a festive bread often doubles as a holder for the dyed eggs. In April 2026 the news site Kosovo Online visited Lešak, near Leposavić, where about twenty members of the Circle of Serbian Sisters were preparing for the holiday. One of them baked a pogača shaped like a basket and filled it with eggs, chocolates and decorations, and the eggs from their workshop were to be displayed at the Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos. The women planned to dye about 500 eggs for visitors to take home, and their Easter greeting is Hristos vaskrse, Christ is risen. The magazine Lepa i srećna publishes an old-style Easter pogača braided from three strands into a wreath and says this bread is traditionally decorated with Easter eggs; other versions coil the dough around a hollow center so the eggs can sit in the middle. The word pogača goes back to the Latin panis focacius, bread baked on the hearth, by way of Byzantine Greek. Bake the wreath on Saturday, fill it with eggs dyed on Good Friday, and put it in the middle of the Easter breakfast table.
